Skin tags are correctly called fibroepithelial polyps or acrochordons. They tend to occur in mid adult life in certain prone individuals. Skin tags occur most commonly around the neck, in the armpits, under the breasts or in the groin.
Skin tags are not dangerous but some people find skin tags unsightly, annoying and often uncomfortable, because of rubbing on clothing. With time skin tags tend to slowly increase in number and size.
Treatment of skin tags is usually not available of the NHS. Dermatologists are able to remove skin tags very effectively with either a minor surgical procedure or by using specialised freezing techniques, which cause the skin tags to shrivel and fall off.
